What it is

The developer API of CryptoRank, a crypto research site whose own pages include fundraising and token-unlock trackers. What you are buying is mostly reference data that a price API does not carry: funding rounds and the investors in them, fund profiles and portfolios, token unlock events, vesting allocations and schedules, public sales and launchpads, airdrop-farming ("drophunting") activities, and a directory of people in the industry. Coin prices, market caps, OHLCV, exchanges and tickers sit alongside it, so one key covers both the asset list and the cap-table history.

The buyer is a research desk, a fund's data team or a product that displays raise and unlock calendars. Someone who only needs prices will find the same market data cheaper or with streaming elsewhere; the reason to be here is the fundraising and vesting datasets.

The current API is v3, at api.cryptorank.io/v3. The docs open by describing it as built "for B2B clients and partners".

Pricing

Five self-serve plans and Enterprise, priced in USD. Month-to-month: Sandbox free, Basic $29, Advanced $149, Pro $475, Business $949. Annual billing is ten times the monthly figure — two months free. The docs' plan table says to treat the pricing page as authoritative; that page returned a Cloudflare challenge on 2026-10-04, so the figures here are from the documentation.

A credit is a call: every v3 endpoint reference page lists its cost as one credit per request. v3 replaced v2's single full-metadata responses with granular endpoints, so a screen that used to be one call can now be several, and the migration guide says so plainly.

There are two quotas and a rate limit. Monthly credits run 10,000, 100,000, 600,000, 2 million and 5 million; per-minute limits run 10, 30, 60, 100 and 200. There is also a daily cap — the errors page documents a DAILY_CREDITS_EXCEEDED response — whose size the docs do not state. The pricing page as archived on 28 August 2026 gave it as 400, 5,000, 30,000, 110,000 and 250,000 credits a day, and listed a licence per plan, with the free Sandbox under a non-commercial Creative Commons licence (BY-NC-SA). Check both on the live page before building on the free plan; we could not open it.

What each step buys is datasets, not volume. The access badge on each endpoint page sets the ladder. Sandbox: coin and blockchain lists and profiles, trending coins, fear-and-greed and altcoin-season indices, and the ID maps. Basic adds exchanges, tickers, search, contracts and price charts. Advanced adds historical OHLCV and market data, token holders, tokenomics, the news feed, fund profiles, fundraising and public-sale aggregates and the global derivatives snapshot. Pro is where the unique data starts — funding-rounds feed, unlock events, vesting allocations and schedules, public-sale lists and the persons list. Business adds funding-round detail, fund co-investors, full person profiles and drophunting tasks.

Data & coverage

History depth on OHLCV is set per plan and enforced rather than truncated: Advanced reaches 30 days at hourly and 2 years at daily, weekly or monthly; Pro 90 days and 5 years; Business a year of hourly and full history at daily and above. A request reaching further back returns 403 PLAN_LIMIT_EXCEEDED — the docs say the window is never silently cut, which is the right behaviour and worth knowing before a backfill job fails on its first page.

The fundraising, unlock and vesting data is compiled by CryptoRank from announcements and token documentation rather than read off a chain or an exchange; the token-holder endpoints, top 100 holders per network with labels, are the on-chain exception. The docs publish no update interval for any dataset and there is no websocket or webhook, so treat the market endpoints as polled snapshots, not a live feed.

Prices and volumes come from the exchanges CryptoRank tracks. The docs give no venue count and no methodology on the API side.

Integrations

Authentication is an X-Api-Key header — v3 no longer accepts the key as a query parameter. The docs name no first-party SDK.

The MCP server is first-party, remote only, at api.cryptorank.io/mcp, with OAuth sign-in from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other clients. It needs the Pro plan or above; the docs say there is no keyless tier and no local server. An unauthenticated initialize returned 401 on 2026-10-04, against 404 for a made-up path on the same host.

Limitations

The data a reader comes for is expensive. Funding rounds and unlock calendars start at $475 a month, and round-level detail with lead investors at $949. Nothing below Pro touches the vesting or round feeds.

No streaming of any kind — no websocket, no webhook — and no order books, trades or derivatives beyond one aggregated market-wide snapshot.

Fundraising and vesting records are compiled data. A round that was never announced, or an allocation a project never published, is not in it, and the API cannot tell you which.

v2 is being wound down. An integration written against full-metadata endpoints has to be rewritten, and will usually spend more credits per screen afterwards.

Alternatives

Messari sells fundraising, token-unlock and research data with its own API. For market data alone, the CoinGecko API and CoinPaprika API are cheaper and refresh faster. For unlocks alone, Tokenomist is the specialist, and its 99-dollar Pro plan includes 1,000 API calls a month of unlock events where this API's unlock data starts on the 475-dollar Pro plan.

FAQ

Does the CryptoRank API have funding round data on the free plan?

No. The free Sandbox plan serves coin lists, profiles, global indices and ID maps. The funding-rounds feed starts at Pro, $475 a month, and the detail of an individual round — lead investors included — at Business, $949. Advanced at $149 gets only fundraising aggregates and the most-active-investors list.

How are CryptoRank API credits counted?

Every v3 endpoint page the docs publish lists the same cost — one credit per request — so a credit is a call. There is a daily credit cap as well as the monthly one; the API answers 429 with DAILY_CREDITS_EXCEEDED when the day's allowance is spent.

Does CryptoRank have an MCP server?

Yes, one authenticated remote server at api.cryptorank.io/mcp, signed into with OAuth. The docs say there is no keyless tier and no local server, and that it needs the Pro plan or higher. An unauthenticated request to it returned 401 on 2026-10-04.

Is the CryptoRank v2 API still available?

It is being retired. The migration guide says v2 and v3 run in parallel for several months, after which v2 plans cannot be bought or renewed and run only until their paid period ends. v3 splits v2's full-metadata responses into many single-purpose endpoints, so one screen can cost several calls.
